About me: Joia Mattheson MS, CNS, LDN
Hi, I'm Joia (pronounced joy-ah), I'm so glad you're here!
I am a Certified Nutrition Specialist, Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Health Coach, and founder of Joia Health. I specialize in metabolic health and reproductive health. I help women and couples optimize their hormones, metabolism, digestion, and fertility using testing and personalized protocols that include personalized nutrition, lifestyle, herbal, and supplement therapy.
My philosophy is based on the knowing that the human body is not the sum of it's individual parts, but rather an integrated whole. In other words: everything is connected. My approach is whole food centered and bioindividual - we work together to determine your unique needs. My definition of health is not the absence of disease, it is a vibrant state of being that enables you to live your best life.
If you are struggling or just want to improve your wellbeing, look no further! I would love to support you through this process.
Integrative wellness rooted in functional medicine: nutrition, labs, herbal therapy, and more.

Frequently asked questions

Traditional nutrition often emphasizes general dietary guidelines, while functional nutrition focuses on using food, supplements, herbs, and lifestyle changes to address the root causes of health issues. It takes into account each individual’s unique genetic predispositions, nutrient status, symptom presentation, environment, and lifestyle to create a personalized plan to bring them back into balance.

In the initial session - whether you book a 90-minute Health Intensive or one of my 1:1 programs, I’ll review your health history, diet, lifestyle, and any symptoms or health concerns. We’ll set personalized health goals and I may recommend lab testing to gather more information. After the session, you will receive a personalized protocol including a nutrition plan, supplement and herbal medicine plan, and lifestyle plan.

The timeline varies depending on your health goals and current condition. Most clients will notice improvements in a few weeks, however it typically takes 2-3 months to start seeing symptoms fully resolve. Consider how long you have been sick or experiencing symptoms - you didn’t get sick overnight and will not heal overnight either. Clients who invest in the 3-month 1:1 Program get the best outcomes because they are committing to putting the time and energy into healing.
-
I do not recommend one specific diet or over-restriction. I do sometimes include personalized meal plans in my initial protocols to provide recipe inspiration and guidance. My intention is to teach you how to eat to help you feel your best, so you do not have to follow a strict plan long-term. Some people enjoy having a plan to follow, however you are not required to and can make it your own.

No - though I have some specialized training in women’s health, I have experience working with people of all genders and enjoy working with men, women, and nonbinary people to help them improve their health.
-
I cannot guarantee results as I am merely your guide, resource, and coach - healing takes a lot of effort on the client’s part as well as mine. Think of it like the dentist - they can give you a cleaning, tell you to floss and brush every day, and avoid sticky candy, but they can’t actually floss for you every night - you have to do that work. Unlike the dentist, I do provide daily messaging support and accountability in my 6- and 12-week programs which I highly recommend utilizing, as accountability and implementation are just as important if not more important than having all the right information!
